Andy Mitten says Man United star must improve to be ‘world class’, he’s not there yet

Andy Mitten was particularly disappointed with one United ace following last nights defeat to Bayern Munich, Marcus Rashford.

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast which was filmed in the Allianz Arena in the wake of the 4-3 loss in Champions League action.

The loss is one which hurts because of the performance opposed to the result, with most of the team really poor.

Andre Onana’s mistake grabbed the headlines while the defence has caught heavy criticism for again being shaky.

But the attack and in particular Marcus Rashford has been criticised for his lack of effort and end product which seems to be missing at the moment.

On this Andy Mitten said: “He has the stature of a world class player, but as a world class player you need to pull in a performance like some of them Bayern Munich players did tonight.”

But what is the issue with Marcus Rashford and how can he reach the world-class level we know he is capable of.

How did Rashford perform against Bayern?

Marcus Rashford’s performance was flattered by his assist which made it seem better than it was.

At 25-years-old, Rashford is now at the age which he is one of the clubs most senior players, which means he should be leading by example.

Something he fails to do as he left Sergio Reguilon to deal with the entire Bayern right side for most of the game. Failing or refusing to track back is shambolic given the current situation at the club.

It is also an attitude which is dangerous as it could rub off on some of the younger players at the club.

In an attacking sense, Rashford wasn’t that bad against Bayern, he had the beating of Konrad Laimer who isn’t a defender and created three chances.

But he needs to be doing more…

A step backwards this season?

Last season Rashford was game changing in his best ever season yet scoring over 30 goals in all competitions.

Along with this he was working hard and dragging United to results at times, something he has lost over the summer.

Obviously Rashford has it in his locker to go on a run scoring 15 in q5 as he did last season after the World Cup.

But as a player who could be world-class, he needs to be performing year round, not for a two month period before disappearing again.
