Ander Herrera was a rung below the greats, a player who was one of the best of the post-Ferguson era, but not in the class of a Roy Keane or Bryan Robson.
Whisper it very quietly, Manchester United might now have a player who can emulate the greats – and Ander Herrera agrees.
The Spaniard sent a message to Kobbie Mainoo after the midfielder’s dramatic winner for Manchester United against Wolves.

Kobbie Mainoo scored an impressive solo goal in the seventh minute of injury time to give Manchester United a 4-3 win over Wolves.
It was a perfectly executed run and strike, sending Manchester United supporters from agony to ecstasy in an instant, with Wolves drawing level just a minute earlier.
Mainoo’s goal was celebrated on Instagram by former Manchester United midfielder Herrera, currently at Athletic Bilbao.
Herrera wrote: “What a player, what a future this Mainoo”, while applauding the goal.
Manchester United have high hopes
For an 18-year-old just to be playing in Manchester United’s first team is a sign of promise. For him to be making such a decisive impact, is the sign of something very special.
Mainoo has become an automatic starter in recent weeks, stepping up during a difficult period for Erik ten Hag’s side.
This was his second goal in a week, following a strike against Newport last Sunday.
Earlier in the day he was announced as player of the month. If he keeps this up, he will be player of the season.
The challenge now is to try and calm the hype. But Mainoo is making this impossible. You might as well embrace it. The teenager is giving everybody hope, amid a campaign which has needed it.
