Ander Herrera says Juan Mata told him he would not regret signing for Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has paid tribute to Juan Mata after the Red Devils confirmed his release.

Herrera played alongside Mata at Old Trafford between 2014 and 2019, and has revealed that his former teammate was key to helping him decide on a move to the club.

Mata told him he would not regret signing

United paid £29 million to sign Herrera in 2014. He stayed for five years, winning three trophies, before leaving on a free transfer in 2019 to sign with Paris Saint-Germain.

Herrera has always retained a strong affection for United, and was one of the first players to tear into the Super League plans last summer, which PSG were not a part of.

While Herrera does not regret joining United, he probably has no regrets over leaving when he did either, winning two league titles in France.

Mata, Herrera and De Gea were close off the pitch, and the goalkeeper yesterday paid tribute to his now former teammate too, describing him as the ‘ultimate professional’.

De Gea responded to Herrera’s post, in a friendly manner bemoaning that he is the last one of the three left. With so many other positions to fix, it is not currently anticipated that new manager Erik ten Hag will change manager in his first transfer window.

De Gea is not quite the only Spaniard at United, thanks to a group of youngsters making their way through.

Alvaro Fernandez was part of the match day squads at the end of last season, while FA Youth Cup winner Marc Jurado hopes to follow suit.

Argentine international Alejandro Garnacho is half-Spanish and played for the same club as De Gea did, Atletico Madrid, before signing with United.

Outlasting Mata and Herrera, who signed in 2014, shows how long De Gea has been going. He joined United in 2011 and is closing in on 500 appearances for the club.
