Alvaro Morata's blistering start to season could help Manchester United land Matheus Cunha

Alvaro Morata‘s blistering start to the season could help Manchester United land fellow Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils are interested in signing the Brazilian forward according to The Mail and ESPN’s Julien Laurens.

The Mail report Cunha could cost £45 million, which for a striker who has never scored more than 10 league goals in a campaign looks a big, big gamble.

Having joined Diego Simeone’s Atletico from Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin last summer, the 23-year-old, who has seven caps for Brazil to his name, scored six goals in his maiden campaign in the Spanish capital.

With Erik ten Hag potentially warming to the idea of letting wantaway striker Cristiano Ronaldo leave Manchester United before the transfer window closes, the former Ajax boss desperately needs reinforcements if United’s number seven does leave or not.

La Liga expert Guillem Balague has said that Atletico Madrid still want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was only last week that ESPN reported that Manchester United had been offered the chance to sign former Chelsea striker Morata.

But given the Spain international’s impressive start to the new campaign, Morata’s performances may result in Simeone sanctioning Cunha’s departure this summer, especially if the La Liga giants do decided to ramp up their interest in Ronaldo.

Having returned from a two-year loan with Juventus, Morata has hit the ground running since arriving back at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The 29-year-old headed into the new La Liga campaign off the back of scoring a hat-trick against the Old Lady in Atletico’s last pre-season friendly.

In last night’s La Liga opener, Morata scored twice in a 3-0 win at Getafe and the man who struggled to justify his £60m price tag at Stamford Bridge looked to be linking up well with Joao Felix.

With Antoine Griezmann coming off the bench and scoring, El Cholo has plenty of firepower at his disposal with or without Ronaldo.

But Morata’s blistering start to the season could convince the Argentine to part ways with Cunha who replaced the 56-time Spain international with ten minutes remaining last night.
