Preston North End loanee Alvaro Fernandez expects to hold talks over his future at Premier League giants Manchester United within the next fortnight as Erik ten Hag has a decision to make.

Amad Diallo is not the only Old Trafford prospect making a name for himself in the Championship.

And, OK, Fernandez has not created quite so many headlines the Sunderland starlet. But nobody should be sleeping on his impact down the M61 at Deepdale.

The 20-year-old left wing-back has six assists in 40 games across all competitions; his all-action intensity helping ensure that Ryan Lowe’s side are still within a chance of securing a play-off berth with just a handful of Championship matchdays remaining.

Manchester United have high hopes for Preston loanee Alvaro Fernandez

“I had a good start when I made two assists against Huddersfield (in the EFL Cup back in August),” Fernandez tells LancsLive.

“(The fans) seemed to love me! When you work, you need that motivation and to start with those two assists – it was a good start. I was injured for one month after that, but from there I took big motivation.

“It’s been a good season for me. I have taken the experience that I wanted right at the beginning. It’s been the perfect season for me, I think.”

Fernandez joined Manchester United from Real Madrid back in 2020, and was named the club’s U23 Player of the Year last term. Whether the Spain U19 international can make the step up into Ten Hag’s first-team, however, remains to be seen.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are firmly established as Ten Hag’s first-choice left-backs. Diogo Dalot, meanwhile, has impressed out of position against both Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion of late too.

And Fernandez expects to find out what the immediate future holds for him at Old Trafford at some point in the coming days.

“I think I will go to speak with them in one or two weeks,” Fernandez adds. “They will say that I need to come back in pre-season, to Manchester United. Then, we will speak again, after training, to see what happens and what they want.

“The world is crazy. You never know in football. Erik ten Hag, he has to choose!”
