Alvaro Fernandez made his debut for Benfica last night, currently on loan from Manchester United.
The Spanish full-back joined the Liga Portuguesa giants on loan until the end of the season, but Benfica do have an option to buy him at the end of the season.
Fernandez arrives with big expectations. Benfica have a knack for producing some of the world’s best young talent.
He started his new footballing venture for the Portuguese outfit last night – and he made an instant impact.

Fernandez took to Instagram after the fixture to express his feelings about putting on the Benfica shirt for the first time. The game ended in a shocking defeat for the European giants, crashing out of the League Cup on penalties to Estoril.
Due to this, the Spaniard rightly has ‘mixed feelings’ of elation and ultimately despair. He said:
‘Mixed feelings tonight to wear this shirt for the first time and defend this shield but hurt not to get the victory we all wanted, we deserved another finish, we remain firm and focused on what comes next. Always looking forward, with the mindset on the next game. Let’s go with it all!’

A great mentality from a youngster, who showed the Benfica faithful a glimpse of his future capabilities.
Manchester United very well may have lost a great talent here. Fernandez never made a debut at Old Trafford but has a bit about him with Benfica interested in developing the academy star.
With Manchester United‘s left-back situation a strange one at the moment, having had Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out all season – it’s intriguing he was let go so easily.
His loan deal also looks like he will be bought at the end, so this may have been the last we ever see of Fernandez at Carrington. Our loss is certainly Benfica’s gain.
