Rangers legend Ally McCoist has offered his two cents on Manchester United and his former side ahead of their Europa League encounter at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have seen their results significantly improve in the Europa League after Ruben Amorim arrived from Sporting CP last November.

Erik ten Hag oversaw three draws in United’s opening three Europa League matches of the season before the Dutchman was sacked by the Premier League club.

United have since won their last three matches in UEFA’s club competition under Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils could still secure a place in the knockout rounds.

The Red Devils are seventh in the Europa League table’s league phase format, which was introduced by UEFA for the 2024-25 campaign.

United are one point clear of eighth-place Rangers ahead of their Europa League clash on Thursday evening with the Scottish side.

McCoist on Man Utd and Rangers

Manchester United’s hopes of securing Champions League football are all but certain to rely on whether or not they lift the Europa League trophy.

Ruben Amorim’s men languish in 13th place in the Premier League table and United are 14 points adrift from fourth-place Chelsea after 22 matches played.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Ally McCoist admitted that both United and Rangers have been “average” and he doesn’t know what to expect from the Red Devils at times.

“I think they’re both average [Manchester United and Rangers], at that level, I think they’re both average,” he said, as per The Rangers Review.

“I think Rangers have been terrific away from home in Europe, really poor away from home domestically and Manchester United, you just absolutely do not know what you’re going to get.”

McCoist’s stance on Man Utd vs Rangers prediction

Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership and Philippe Clement’s men are 13 points adrift from league leaders — and fierce rivals — Celtic.

The Gers have won two of their last five Europa League matches and Rangers are coming off the back of a 5-0 win over Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

United secured a late 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton at Old Trafford last Thursday before losing 3-1 to Brighton in the Premier League at home on Sunday.

McCoist said that Southampton should have beaten United, but the Red Devils were bailed out after Amad Diallo scored a stunning late hat-trick for his side last week.

The 62-year-old Rangers legend argued that it is “almost impossible to call” who will come out on top between his former side and United on Thursday evening.

“I was at the Southampton game and they should have beat them, Amad scored a hat trick in the last eight minutes and I’m telling you, Southampton should have beaten them,” McCoist continued.

“It’s almost impossible to call because I think they’re both in average form.”
