Manchester United’s transfer business has been impressive this summer but there are still a few missing pieces to the puzzle.

Ruben Amorim often cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines last season when watching his Manchester United side struggle to score.

Ineos have moved quickly to address that issue with a new £200 million front line, including new £66m arrival Benjamin Sesko.

Alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, United now have a star-studded attack, but now Ineos have set their sights on strengthening in other areas.

United have made an approach for Carlos Baleba, while a new goalkeeper could also be on the cards with ongoing links to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ally McCoist agrees with Ruben Amorim’s ‘pace’ complaint

The Red Devils enjoyed a strong pre-season, remaining unbeaten in all five of their friendly matches.

However, in the first clash against Leeds United, Amorim spotted a “lack of pace” in midfield – an issue he clearly felt needed to be addressed this summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ally McCoist agreed that United’s biggest issue is now their midfield department.

“I think Casemiro has been a brilliant player, but I worry about a lack of pace in the middle of the park,” McCoist said.

“I think the front three are different class now. They have a good front three who will score goals, but I’m concerned about a lack of pace in the middle of the park.

“They’ve made some excellent signings in forward areas, but so have everyone else.”

Man United must sign a midfielder before summer deadline

A fascinating transfer window has drummed up plenty of excitement in United’s fanbase about the upcoming 2025/26 campaign, but the midfield is still a cause for concern.

United put on some dominant performances in pre-season, but too often there was a lack of balance in midfield.

Amorim was impressed with Kobbie Mainoo and the improvements he has made over the summer, but it is unclear who will be his partner in a midfield pivot.

Bruno Fernandes could drop deeper in 25/26, but United are lacking an athletic, defensive-minded midfielder. Casemiro would be an ideal choice, but at 33 years old, he has often been outran in the Premier League.

Baleba is perfect for Amorim’s system, but Brighton’s £100m price tag makes a deal extremely difficult.

Even if United miss out on Baleba, Amorim wants an “athletic” midfielder to be signed, and the worst-case scenario is if Ineos don’t bring in anyone.
