Ally McCoist argues Man Utd star is ‘best of an average bunch’ and aims brutal dig at one Erik ten Hag signing

Ally McCoist singled out two Manchester United stars under Erik ten Hag after the Red Devils returned to winning ways after the September international break.

Manchester United had won their opening Premier League match of the season against Fulham at Old Trafford in August before suffering back-to-back defeats.

Following the 1-0 scoreline against Fulham, Erik ten Hag’s men suffered a 2-1 loss to Brighton at the Amex before a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford this month.

However, Ten Hag’s side navigated a tricky opening 30 minutes against Southampton at the St Mary’s to seal all three Premier League points on Saturday.

Matthijs de Ligt opened the scoring for United at the St Mary’s in the first half after Andre Onana denied Southampton’s Cameron Archer from the spot-kick.

Marcus Rashford ended his goalscoring drought and doubled United’s advantage only six minutes after Matthijs de Ligt’s opener against Southampton.

United signed off their 3-0 win in second-half injury time after Alejandro Garnacho climbed off the bench and extended the Red Devils’ advantage.

McCoist talks two Man Utd stars

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday, Rangers legend Ally McCoist pulled no punches towards struggling Manchester United winger Antony.

Antony has only managed a very brief cameo against Brighton last month and the United star has been left on the bench for United’s other three league fixtures.

The 24-year-old Brazilian winger played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, but Antony has struggled to make a name for himself at United after his big-money move in 2022.

Antony’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain after falling down the pecking order under Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo.

McCoist boldly claimed that Garnacho has been the “best of an average bunch” when it comes to wide players at United this season.

“Let’s be honest about it,” he said.

“He [Antony] has far from set the place on fire. I have got to say, Garnacho is the one for me in the wide positions has been the best of an average bunch.

“You look at [Marcus] Rashford on the other side as well, I know he scored at the weekend, his form has not been great.

“I think Garnacho has been the best of an average bunch.”

Ten Hag sends warning to Antony

Antony faces an uphill battle in securing regular first-team football after struggling to impress in his second season at United in the 2023-24 campaign.

The Brazil international only scored three times and registered two assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for United last season.

Ten Hag has urged Antony to fight for his place at United and is keen for the former Ajax star to challenge wingers Amad Diallo and Garnacho.

“That is professional football, that is top football,” he said, as per The Guardian.

“Those are the laws. You pick the team that you think has the most chance to win a game.

“The players have to fight for their positions. You pick the XI who have the best dynamic, the best chemistry.

“We are happy with that: two players [Diallo and Garnacho] developed from the academy into the team, into the selection.

“Now he has to bounce back and he has the abilities to do it. If he is doing the right thing, he can compete with them.

“He is fighting for his position. That’s what we expect from every player in the squad at Manchester United, what they should do.

“The other players are doing so well. We have Amad, Garna – very effective. [Marcus] Rashford scored at the weekend [a 3-0 win at Southampton]. He has to get over them.”
