Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes pulled up with a hamstring problem during the defeat to Aston Villa.
Since his move to Old Trafford in 2020, Bruno Fernandes’ injury record has been close to spotless.
So when the Portuguese playmaker reached for his hamstring in the first half of the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, many Manchester United fans around the globe would have been holding their breath.
Ruben Amorim is refusing to give up on a quick return for Bruno Fernandes
When do you think Bruno Fernandes will return?
Ruben Amorim provided an update on Fernandes’ injury after the full-time whistle, explaining that it is soft tissue damage that could leave him sidelined for upcoming matches.
With a hectic festive fixture list on the horizon, Bruno Fernandes’ injury has come at a terrible time for Amorim and United.

Bruno Fernandes could miss five Man United matches
According to The Telegraph, Fernandes is expected to be missing for “at least a month” because of the injury suffered against Villa.
Amorim refuses to rule out an earlier return for Fernandes because of his track record with injuries, but it means that the 31-year-old is at risk of missing out on five fixtures.

Next up for United is a visit from Newcastle United on the eve of Boxing Day, and it seems as though Amorim will have to tackle that fixture with a very weakened squad.
The final match of 2025 sees United host bottom-of-the-table Wolves, a side that Fernandes scored twice and registered one assist against in the reverse fixture.
Fernandes is also set to miss matches against fierce rivals Leeds United and Manchester City in the coming weeks. An early return could see Fernandes back in the squad for the Manchester derby.
How Man United can replace Bruno Fernandes
Most United fans will agree that replacing Fernandes is an impossible task, but that is the headache that Amorim will have to work around in the coming weeks.
WHAT did you think of Lisandro Martinez’s performance?🇦🇷
Do you want to see him in midfield again?
The silver lining from the Villa defeat is that Lisandro Martinez starred in midfield and has made himself an option to play as a No.6 if needed.
Casemiro will also return to action on Boxing Day after missing the Villa clash through suspension.

Mason Mount dropped into midfield as part of Amorim’s tactical tweak on Sunday afternoon. A repeat of that tactic could be used against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.
Replacing Fernandes’ creativity will be a huge task, and that places extra responsibility in the hands of summer signing Matheus Cunha, who is finding form at just the right time.
