Manchester United’s Alex Telles is a talented footballer. However, since his move to Old Trafford, he is yet to be given a regular platform to show just how good he is.

The £15.4million signing (BBC) has featured 11 times for United thus far. And his crossing ability was on show early. However, he is still to really get going and shine as he did regularly for former club FC Porto.

For now, Luke Shaw remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s more trusted option at left-back. But Telles was not signed as mere backup.

He was brought in for his attacking nous and his experience as much as his ability further back. And this weekend he should be bossing the match.

United take on Watford in the FA Cup third round and Telles is likely to start.

The Hornets have the second-best defensive record in the Championship and are pushing hard for promotion. As a result, this will be far from an easy game.

But a player like Telles could be key to unlocking the visitors’ back line.

United’s forward struggled in the FA Cup semi-final and Edinson Cavani remains suspended for this game.

Another attacking force

With Bruno Fernandes likely to be rested, others will need to act as creative catalysts, with Telles and Donny van de Beek the most likely candidates.

During his time in Portugal, United’s new left-back scored 26 goals and provided 57 assists. That second number is particularly impressive, with many of Telles’s strikes coming from the penalty spot.

So far, Telles has only set up one goal for United but this weekend is an ideal chance to give Solskjaer a real selection headache.

He cannot afford to fall short in a game United need to win. So this weekend could be when we start to see the real Telles.
