It was Erik ten Hag who memorably said ‘eras come to an end’ at his opening press conference and we could be witnessing the crumbling of Liverpool’s recent spell at the top.
While a dangerous statement to make ahead of the meeting between Manchester United and Liverpool in a fortnight, even a win for Jurgen Klopp’s side then would not save them from a trophyless season.
The Champions League was Liverpool’s last hope of a trophy this season and last night appeared to kill off their chances.
Real Madrid demolished them 5-2 at Anfield, even after going 2-0 down. Even Jurgen Klopp was out of excuses at the final whistle.

Alejandro Garnacho reacts
Liverpool losing heavily was a cheerful moment for Manchester United fans, and one player in particular enjoyed it too.
Alejandro Garnacho has struck up a friendship with Real Madrid star Vinicius, who hailed his performance in the Manchester derby.
Last night he returned the compliment after watching Vinicius score two goals at Anfield to lead a comeback as Real won 5-2.
Garnacho wrote ‘What a player’ in response, showing his admiration for the winger’s impactful performance.

Vinicius spared us all a Liverpool win last year in the Champions League final when he struck the winner for Real in Paris. He looks to have ended their season once again.
The Brazilian winger is also close pals with compatriot Casemiro, and congratulated him on a strong performance for United against Barcelona last week.
Let’s hope Casemiro and Garnacho can give the Real Madrid winger more reasons to cheer later this week in the second leg.
