Playing for Man Utd is the pinnacle of many football players’ careers, but for a marquee one, it turned into a nightmare.

Throughout history, there are numerous examples of players turning sour at Man Utd, be it through external factors or internal.

Jadon Sancho is the one going through it in real time, who is a combination of both, but he’s not even the worst case of it.

That (dis)honour belongs to a £60m superstar who broke the transfer record when he arrived, but is now only known for breaking Man Utd fans‘ hearts.

Would you put him above Antony? Alexis Sanchez? What went wrong for him?

Angel di Maria makes remarkable Man Utd exit claim

When it comes to bitter exits from Old Trafford, not many come close to Angel di Maria, who, to this day, is regarded as one of the worst players to play for the club.

That’s not because of a lack of quality in his game on the pitch, but because of his conduct off it.

Di Maria fell out with Louis van Gaal spectacularly, before an attempted robbery at his house turned things from bad to worse for him.

He gave up on the club soon after and forced through a move, which is a non-negotiable in the eyes of fans who dream of playing for the club.

In a recent interview with SI FC, Di Maria made some truly remarkable claims that will further drop him in the eyes of fans, if at all that was possible.

He said: “The family wasn’t happy or comfortable either, they weren’t happy in the city, the weather doesn’t help for one to be happy.

“Then the fight with Van Gaal, everything kept building up bigger and bigger like a snowball. Obviously, it’s not something said, and you don’t want it to happen, but I’m grateful they tried to rob me (burglary attempt at his house).

“Because from that point I told my agent I wanted to leave no matter what, if I had to terminate, if I had to pay, I wanted to leave no matter what, and they accepted my departure.”

For a player to claim that he hated life at United so much that he feels grateful to even have an attempted burglary to accelerate his exit is remarkable.

An incident like that shouldn’t be made light of, but the player himself has done so, vindicating Man Utd fans who lost all respect for him.

Van Gaal was definitely a problem, and so was United’s general haphazard approach to squad building, but true leaders emerge from the rubble of crisis.

Di Maria ended up becoming the costliest piece of rubble who was looking for any and all opportunities to escape it, even if that meant being grateful for an attempted robbery at a place where his family lived.
