£47m Manchester United star shares Solskjaer message after international win

Bruno Fernandes received a ‘hug’ from former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer via the Iceland coach after Portugal’s latest Euro qualifying victory on Sunday night.

There is a distinct Manchester United flavour about the Euro qualifier Golden Boot race. At top spot sits Romelu Lukaku, the former Premier League frontman netting four times in a 20-minute blitz against Azerbaijan.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Rasmus Hojlund – United forwards past and future – sit on 10 and seven respectively, the latter level with Scott McTominay and one ahead of Bruno Fernandes.

The Manchester United captain scored his sixth goal in just ten qualifiers as Portugal maintained their 100 per cent record with a comfortable 2-0 win over Iceland.

And, after the game, Iceland’s Norwegian head coach Age Hareide had a message for Bruno from the man who brought him to Old Trafford nearly four years ago

Manchester United captain shines for Portugal again

“The Icelandic coach says he spoke to Solskjaer, who had sent me a hug,” Bruno smiles, speaking to Record.

Fernandes now has 13 goals or assists in just ten qualifiers. He opened the scoring against Hareide’s side with a trademark laser-like finish from the edge of the penalty area.

“Everyone wants to score. Everyone wants to be important, to assist,” the former Sporting Lisbon talisman adds. “I don’t like talking (about me) individually. It’s not my focus.

“I’m happy to score goals and assist. It means I’m helping. It’s up to me to serve my team-mates. We have a lot of quality up front and, with that quality, it’s easier to make assists.”

Seven goals and six assist for Fernandes in qualifiers

Fernandes’ form at club level has come in for criticism in some quarters of late.

Only Kieran Trippier of Newcastle United and Liverpool superstar Mo Salah have created more ‘big chances’ than his seven so far this term, however, and do not be surprised to see Fernandes’ United numbers skyrocket once Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Antony and co find their Premier League shooting boots.
