Sporting broke financial records under Ruben Amorim
The financial health of United has been a major talking point since the Ineos takeover. There have been sweeping changes behind the scenes, including mass job cuts and controversial ticket price rises.
United recorded revenue of £667m in the club’s latest accounts, which was followed by Ineos launching ‘Project 90’, which aims to grow the club’s balance sheet by £90m each year.
If Amorim’s record at Sporting is anything to go by, Ineos can be confident that results on and off the pitch will improve.
Amorim led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years after taking charge of a club in crisis. Under the Portuguese, Sporting became the dominant side in Portugal and were consistently qualifying for the Champions League.
As pointed out by Swiss Ramble, Sporting enjoyed a huge growth in revenue under Amorim as a result of the improved performances under him.
In their latest 2024/25 accounts – Amorim’s last season in charge – Sporting recorded club record revenue of £129 million (€148m). It is a reminder of just how successful Amorim was in Portugal when it came to building a top-level European side.
The upturn in finances came as a result of Sporting winning the league and enjoying a strong run in the Champions League.

Amorim’s strong on-pitch results were not the only reason why Sporting’s revenues spiked. His ability to develop players into valuable superstars was also a key factor.
Sporting rely on player sales as part of their trading model, and Amorim is responsible for improving the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Geovany Quenda, Manuel Ugarte and Matheus Nunes before they were sold on for huge fees.

Even in Amorim’s disappointing first year, several players have already shown improvement under his tutelage, including Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo.
United have traditionally struggled to sell players at similar rates to their Premier League rivals, but Amorim’s record with youth players should help the club maximise the potential of Carrington – not only in terms of first-team potential but also in terms of sales.
