Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth was full of refereeing controversy.

Rasmus Hojlund rescued a point for Manchester United by scoring in injury time against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils were staring at a record-breaking 16th Premier League defeat this season before the Danish forward found the back of the net.

The hosts took the lead through United target Antoine Semenyo in the first half – his effort proved to be Bournemouth’s only shot on target the entire match.

United pushed for an equaliser, and momentum swung in their favour when Cherries striker Evanilson was sent off.

Mark Clattenburg’s view on Evanilson red card incident

United dominated possession at the Vitality Stadium but once again Amorim lacked a clinical finisher up front.

The search for an equaliser ramped up once Bournemouth’s biggest goal threat was shown a red card by referee Peter Bankes following VAR’s recommendation for an on-field review.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg exclusively spoke to United in Focus about the decision and his stance is clear.

“People will argue that there is no consistency after an earlier challenge by Adams on Garnacho was given as a yellow card.

“But there are some differences in the red card challenge by Evanilson on Mazraoui. Evanilson catches his opponent with one of his legs and then catches him again with his other foot which is high and with studs showing which catches him around the knee.

“There is no need to have this foot so high when making the challenge and that’s why the VAR deems the challenge as high and endangering the safety of the opponent.

“When you watch it in slow motion and the point of contact made, Evanilson can have no arguments.”

Premier League red card statement in Man United vs Bournemouth

While some felt Evanlison slipping should have been taken into account, Clattenburg clearly feels the right decision was made by the match officials.

Shortly after the incident, the Premier League issued a statement explaining the decision and process taken by the referee and VAR.

“VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card for the challenge by Evanilson on Mazraoui – with the challenge deemed to be two-footed with both feet off the ground, endangering the safety of the opponent. Upon review, the referee issued a red card to Evanilson for serious foul play,” the statement read.

After the full-time whistle, Amorim remained tight-lipped about the referee’s performance, saying: “”I never comment on red cards, win, lose or draw.”
