Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has attributed hard work and confidence as the reasons behind Dan James’ return to goalscoring form for Manchester United.

The Welshman has found the net three times in his last three games, with two excellent finishes in games this week against Real Sociedad and Newcastle United.

James enjoyed brilliant form straight after joining United but has struggled since. His record of six goals in 12 games this season is decent.

Solskjaer: Dan James has worked hard to get back

BT Sport‘s Des Kelly asked Solskjaer how James had returned to good form for United in the aftermath of a 3-1 victory for the Reds at home to Newcastle.

“He never disappeared,” the Norwegian said.

“He’s been working hard behind the scenes. He’s always available, always a player that you can use in a few different positions with his energy and pace.”

“He’s learning the game. I’m very happy for him.”

Solskjaer’s coaching staff have a good record of helping players improve their attacking contributions. Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood can attest to that. So can Scott McTominay and James.

Dan James goalscoring form is down to confidence

“Yeah, we worked with him,” Solskjaer explained.

“We try to help everyone but of course Dan came from the Championship up to United. He hit a few goals in the first games, [and] it’s bound to take some energy from you, all the headlines and media attention.

“But he’s knuckled down and really worked to get back to full fitness and mainly confidence to believe in himself.”

United have a merciless fixture list and having a reliable squad player in James, who offers something different to his teammates, is a positive. He needs to continue to offer consistent quality as an occasional starter or a substitute.
