Shay Given says there was a ‘big negative’ for Man Utd against West Ham, Danny Murphy agrees

Manchester United had a glorious 3-0 victory against West Ham, but a dampener on the day had to be a Lisandro Martinez injury.

The Argentine went down in the second half after a clash with Vladimir Coufal, which didn’t look good.

Erik ten Hag later confirmed that the injury looked like a bad one, and it’s left Manchester United fans fearful of the outcome, with Lisandro Martinez evidently one of the shining lights in the United side.

He’ll be a big miss to the squad, as he’s integral to Ten Hag’s style of play. Shay Given and Danny Murphy discussed this.

Shay Given and Danny Murphy on Lisandro Martinez’s injury

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Given and Murphy spoke about the one negative for Manchester United on the day – the Martinez injury.

“It was a big negative from the game as their performance,” Given begins. “They deserved the victory, but Martinez is big news of course.

“He’s been out for a long period with a foot injury and the way the defender fell on top of him he looks like he hurt his knee, so looks like another bit of time on the sidelines for him.”

Danny Murphy then gave his verdict. He said: “When you’ve got composed players at the back, like him and like Shaw, especially those two on the left side, it gives you balance but it also discourages the press.

“Because the first time they play through you and you get a bit of joy, teams drop off and think hold on we’re on the back foot here. So I think his composure on the ball will be greatly missed.”

Lisandro Martinez will be ‘greatly missed’

It really is no coincidence that Manchester United have been unbeaten since Licha’s return. The World Cup winner adds so much to the United side.

The latest on his injury so far is Ten Hag confirming it could be a bad one – but we eagerly await a real update from the club this week. Let’s hope for Martinez, and for fans, it’s good news.
