Rio Ferdinand’s reaction to VAR blunder during 4-3 Man Utd win over Wolves says it all

In what was a dramatic 4-3 win for Manchester United on Thursday night, VAR once again was at the centre of it all.

With Manchester United 2-0 up and flying, Wolves didn’t look like ever scoring past a composed United defence. But that all changed when Pedro Neto hit the deck following the deftest of touches from Casemiro, which saw the referee point to the spot.

The contact was as minimal as it could be and Neto clearly was looking for it as he went flying into the air before being rewarded for this with a penalty.

VAR reviewed and despite it being a ludicrous decision, they upheld the penalty and consequently, the evening got a great deal more complicated for United, as Kobbie Mainoo saved the day with a last-minute strike.

After the game, Rio Ferdinand shared his verdict on the call.

Rio Ferdinand reacts to poor VAR decision

Speaking on TNT Sports following the 4-3 win for United on Thursday night, Ferdinand couldn’t hold back his scathing review of VAR.

“I was baffled last night with the penalty that was given [Liverpool vs Chelsea]. and now this one today when there was minimal contact is the same.

“When you’re in a situation where you can slow-mo it then look at it and break it down, I just can’t believe it. VAR needs to look at itself, or we need to look at the people doing VAR. We’re just not getting it right.”

He’s absolutely spot on and it’s concerning these kinds of decisions are still happening on such a consistent basis, things need to improve or just get rid of it entirely.

VAR is poor but Manchester United created their own issues

Before the penalty, United were incredible and good enough to have been well out of reach even if Wolves grabbed a controversial penalty.

Erik ten Hag needs his side to be more ruthless and finish games off when they’re on top like that.

We need to avoid giving teams the chance to get back into games as so often this season it’s cost us dearly and will continue to do so.

That being said, VAR needs to sort itself out before it destroys football.
