Paul Scholes thinks Ruben Amorim will drop in-form Man Utd player for teammate who had nightmare against Southampton

Manchester United beat Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday in the Premier League but were far from at their best.

The Red Devils trailed for most of the game before a 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo turned the tie on its head and ensured all three points stayed in Manchester.

Despite the 3-1 win, Ruben Amorim would have been disappointed with his side’s performance. He named a strong starting lineup but most of the players failed to turn up.

And for one player in particular, Thursday night’s match is one he won’t want to watch back anytime soon.

Paul Scholes expecting Ruben Amorim to make tough call

Leny Yoro came into defence at the expense of Harry Maguire who dropped to the bench following his mammoth FA Cup performance against Arsenal last weekend.

Speaking to TNT Sports before kick-off about Amorim’s decision, Paul Scholes said: “He’s [Leny Yoro] a player that I think we need to get playing.

“I don’t really see, going forward, [Matthijs] De Ligt and [Harry] Maguire playing in the same back three.”

Matthijs De Ligt has been one of United’s most reliable players since his summer move from Bayern Munich and will continue to keep his place as long as he’s fit.

Maguire, on the other hand, despite his manager admitting they’re going to trigger a one-year extension in his contract, is now expected to play more of a rotational role.

The former Leicester City man came on for Yoro after Amad Diallo had equalised and there were just seven minutes left to play.

And after witnessing his performance, fans are already concerned by Yoro’s performance, and some will certainly be wondering if Scholes has it the wrong way around.

Leny Yoro’s Kamaldeen Sulemana nightmare

Even though he failed to get on the scoresheet, Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana was undoubtedly his side’s best player, and had it not been for Amad Diallo’s hat-trick, would’ve probably been named the player of the match.

The Ghanaian forward was superb. He ran at Yoro and got the better of him all evening. United’s number 15 is now a slouch but Sulemana made him look like he had played back-to-back games in the same evening.

Yoro definitely had a game to forget, but he will know that if he is to make it in the fast-paced Premier League, he must improve and cannot have too many nights like Thursday.

Next up for United is a home match against Brighton. The Red Devils will welcome the Seagulls to Old Trafford on Sunday for another important Premier League showdown.

It’ll be interesting to see if Amorim sticks with Yoro or if he reverts back to the experience of Maguire.
