Amad Diallo’s hat-trick inspired a comeback victory for Manchester United over Southampton.

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League on Thursday night.

The Reds beat Southampton 3-1 after a dramatic clash at Old Trafford, which saw the relegation contenders open the scoring before half-time through an own goal from Manuel Ugarte.

Southampton were the better side for most of the game, but United came to life in the final 12 minutes to force a memorable comeback.

Amad Diallo scored United’s first hat-trick since 2022 to secure three points as the Reds jumped from 15th to 12th in the league table.

Manchester United showed more quality than Southampton

Although Southampton were the better side for large parts of the game, they lacked the quality to hurt United and take advantage of the possession they were given.

Hat-trick hero Amad argues that United deserved the win after showing more quality than their struggling opponents in the dying minutes.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Amad said: “In football you have to believe. We believed until the end and we are very happy to win this game. We drew with Arsenal and Liverpool so the confidence was there. We are very happy.”

Amad explained that United’s first-team need to show more hunger in the final third, which they did in the final 12 minutes, thanks to his heroics.

“We know we have quality players in this team,” Amad added. “We need sometimes to be more hungry in the final third.

“Today we showed at the end we were the best team. I am so happy for the win today because this team deserves it.”

Amad Diallo fills wing-back void

A lot has been written about Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation and the reliance on having two wing-backs getting up and down the flank.

Diogo Dalot was unavailable through suspension which meant Amad Diallo played on the right, while Noussair Mazraoui operated on the left.

Amad stressed that he is prepared to play any position for United, saying: “I am ready to play every position where the manager likes to put me.

“I am ready to fight for this club. I am so happy to play where the manager wants me to play and I am so happy to score a hat-trick.”

Amad is talking the talk, but more importantly, he backs it up by walking the walk.
