MUTV pundits say Man Utd duo were ‘absolutely brilliant’ against Newcastle despite defeat

Manchester United pair Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have been lauded following their displays against Newcastle.

On Saturday night at St James’ Park, Manchester United put in one of the poorest displays of the season which rightfully so has left many furious.

Newcastle beat United 1-0, however, that scoreline doesn’t do them justice as they battered us for the entire game.

Winning every ball and out-working Erik ten Hag’s side, the defeat is the least of his concerns with the performance and character of the players involved far more troubling.

There were only a handful of players who could hold their heads high after the game and these have been praised.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw lauded as only good performers

After the game, two MUTV pundits agreed that the centre-back pairing was among the only players who could be happy with their displays.

Paul Woolston speaking on MUTV said: “Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, they can walk off the pitch with their heads held high they are the only two really. There was only a glimpse of excellence from the attacking players we had.”

Ben Thornley shared this view as he declared: “Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw as a partnership were absolutely brilliant.”

Meanwhile, another MUTV pundit was not in the mood for praise and instead admitted that he was hoping Ten Hag was tearing into the team.

David May: “I sincerely hope the manager rips some heads in that dressing room because they deserve it.”

Maguire and Shaw have always been a solid duo for United

Going back to the days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Shaw and Maguire have been a solid duo.

Albeit in different roles, the premise stands they were almost always reliable up until Maguire’s decline.

Together in central defence, they are a really solid pairing, both are sublime defensively and technically brilliant on the ball.

While they are also complimentary of each other’s weaknesses. Until Lisandro Martinez returns at least or a new defender arrives, this pairing is what we should run with.
