United fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, insisted that Cunha’s lively display against Brighton showed shades of former Red Devils No 10 Wayne Rooney.
One United fan said: “Cunha’s tenacity reminds me of Rooney.”
Another wrote: “Cunha is a Brazilian Rooney.”
“Cunha is going to be the Rooney of this new generation,” a third X user tweeted.

While a fifth added: “Wow, the [No] 10 shirt really dropped off after Rooney! Oh well, Cunha will bring it back.”

United broke the deadlock in the 24th minute of the Premier League clash on Saturday after Matheus Cunha produced a superb finish from outside of the box.
Casemiro assisted Matheus Cunha for the opener, but then the ex-Real Madrid star netted United’s second in the 34th minute after his effort took a huge deflection.
Goals from Cunha and Casemiro ensured that United took a 2-0 lead into the break and left Brighton with an uphill battle for the second half of the tie at Old Trafford.
Brighton suffered another setback against United after the break in the Premier League clash, with Bryan Mbeumo extending the Red Devils’ lead in the 61st minute.
The Seagulls were able to reduce the deficit after former United striker Danny Welbeck scored a stunning free-kick past Senne Lammens in the 74th minute.
Brighton fought back after Danny Welbeck’s free-kick and offered a real scare for United after Charalampos Kostoulas netted in injury time for the Seagulls.
However, Mbeumo completed his stunning brace deep into injury time and ensured United’s 4-2 win over Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
