It’s a good job Facundo Pellistri is patient. Having signed for Manchester United on October 2020, he finally made his first start for the club tonight, in March 2023.

After an impressive substitute cameo against Real Betis last week, and with Antony missing through illness, Pellistri was selected on United’s right wing over Jadon Sancho.

This was the chance Pellistri had been waiting for, and one he has earned. This was a key milestone in his United career.

He produced a solid if unspectacular display as Manchester United won 1-0 in the second leg against Real Betis.

Facundo Pellistri’s first start

Facundo Pellistri almost made an impact inside the first minute, when his cross almost curled in underneath the Real Betis crossbar.

He is a traditional winger who hold his position on the right touchline, and likes to run at the opposition, whether he is going down the flank or cutting inside towards the penalty area.

He was unfortunate to be booked in the first half when attempting to retain possession, he slid in, and a foul was awarded against him.

Pellistri came close to helping United breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when his shot was turned onto the post by Wout Weghorst.

It was telling that with five substitutes made in the second half, Pellistri retained his place, playing all 90 minutes.

His performance was a measured one, he linked up well with his teammates and never panicked when in possession.

United won the game on the night 1-0 with Marcus Rashford scoring early into the second half.
