Manchester United now linked with Nicolas Tagliafico
Manchester United have been linked to nearly every Ajax player this transfer window, so it feels like.
We can now add one more to the list, Nicolas Tagliafico.
Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad report United view Tagliafico as a potential recruit at left-back, with Erik ten Hag now showing an interest.
Tagliafico has only one year remaining on his current Ajax deal and the newspaper report he could be available for as little as £5 million.
United now linked with Nicolas Tagliafico
It’s never a surprise to see United linked with an Ajax player, and Nicolas Tagliafico could be of particular interest to Erik ten Hag.
Tagliafico is the only Ajax player to have played in Ten Hag’s first game as Ajax manager, and his final one.
The defender played 169 matches under Ten Hag in total, scoring 16 goals in the process, and racking up more than 13,000 playing minutes.
He has 40 international caps for Argentina and is due to be part of the World Cup squad later this year.
Where would Tagliafico fit in
Tagliafico is 29, and would not be a long-term addition. He would be an alternative if United miss out on Feyenoord’s Tyrell Malacia, 22.
But at a cheap price, for a player Ten Hag trusts completely, this probably would not be a bad move at all, and would see Tagliafico push Alex Telles towards the exit door.
In terms of upgrading the squad, Tagliafico for Telles would be an improvement, and provide better cover or alternative for Luke Shaw.
There is a sense at Ajax that if any player deserves a move to a big club, it is Tagliafico, who has given everything to the club during their recent cycles, starring with Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek in their 2019 run to the Champions League semi-finals, and still sticking around for their recent success.
United’s priority is to sign Frenkie de Jong to improve the midfield, The Telegraph report, then deals in other positions will progress.
Ajax want to keep certain players at the club, but the Tagliafico situation needs fixing due to his expiring deal and there is not an expectation he will sign a new deal.
Algemeen Dagblad report Ajax are looking at signing AZ Alkmaar left-back Owen Wijndal as Tagliafico’s replacement, opening the door for a summer move.
