Manchester United emerged 2-0 victors over Rangers in a pre-season friendly, and there were some very decent performances in Erik ten Hag’s side.
As Leny Yoro made his Manchester United debut, it was Amad Diallo who ultimately stole the show – but that wasn’t to say there weren’t a few other standout names.
Harry Amass was also fantastic in Scotland, while Andre Onana once again showed his class, keeping a clean sheet and producing some fine saves in between the Manchester United sticks.
One player who didn’t particularly have the finest of games, but took his moment when it came was Joe Hugill. He made a name for himself with his thunderous strike against the Gers.

Joe Hugill shines for Manchester United
Hugill is a player who has never really been in consideration for featuring in the United first-team squad, but pre-season has given him a chance to showcase his abilities to Erik ten Hag.
Despite not being too involved, when the opportunity presented itself after a fantastic Maxi Oyedele move – Hugill finished with the utmost conviction.
He smashed it past a helpless Jack Butland – and all but ensured that it would be Manchester United who would emerge victorious in Edinburgh.
Hugill appears to have benefitted from the influence of Ruud van Nisterooy, who has recently joined the coaching staff at Old Trafford for the 24/25 season.
Hugill stats vs Rangers
- 45 minutes played
- 1 goal
- 1 shot
- 4/6 accurate passes (67%)
- 1/1 shot accuracy (100%)
- 7 duels lost
Kobbie Mainoo among other Man Utd stars react
Hugill took to Instagram to post the three-word message, ‘bar and in,’ referring to the nature of how his goal went down at Murrayfield.
A number of Manchester United academy stars and first-team squad took to the comments to congratulate Hugill on his goal.
Kobbie Mainoo led the praise, with the Euro 2024 star commenting, ‘Finishhh’.

Ethan Wheatley, the man who Hugill came on for, also left a nice message, he said: ‘You’re clear’.

Among the others, were Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Dan Gore, Toby Collyer, Rhys Bennett and Shola Shoretire.

Whether Hugill gets any chances for the Red Devils remains to be seen. He has spent the last few seasons on loan at various English clubs in the lower tiers, and another spell could be on the cards particularly with Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Wheatley seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.
