Four winners and three losers as Manchester United beat Rangers 2-1

Manchester United won against Rangers in the Europa League after a late goal from captain Bruno Fernandes.

Late drama saw Manchester United come out on top against Rangers with Bruno Fernandes grabbing a late winner, after Rangers appeared to have stolen a point with a 88th minute equaliser.

Speaking after the game, Fernandes said: “At this club, you need to win every game. You know that if you don’t win games here, it will be difficult. I hope our fans never get used to losing games. I hope they believe in this team to win games.”

We broke down our winners and losers from the victory, with United moving into fourth place in the Europa League table.

Winners

Bruno Fernandes

There really is nothing better than a last minute winner at Old Trafford, especially on a European night.

Bruno Fernandes really gave the crowd something to cheer with a 92nd minute goal after a sumptuous pass from defender Lisandro Martinez.

This was a captain’s goal, scored by a player who probably would have been disappointed with his 90 minutes, he stepped up when it mattered most.

Christian Eriksen

Last week against Southampton, Christian Eriksen had his first goal contribution since October, an assist against Southampton. Now he has two in two weeks.

Eriksen’s deliveries caused problems for Rangers, with his corner inexplicably punched into his own net by goalkeeper Jack Butland, a former Erik ten Hag loanee.

Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer is a genuine option now for Manchester United, chosen to start his first ever Europa League game.

After overcoming an early mistake, Collyer was strong in midfield for United, showing he belongs at this level, and not daunted at all about the occasion.

His selection in the ‘Battle of Britain’ was a great show of faith from Ruben Amorim, and the youngster did not let his coach down.

Alejandro Garnacho

Amid heavy speculation linking Alejandro Garnacho with an exit, the Argentine was somewhat of a surprise starter.

Garnacho was lively, a constant threat, and heard his name sung by the Old Trafford crowd, who clearly still appreciate him.

He played all 90 minutes, and if Garnacho does leave United and this is his final European game, he can hold his head high.

Losers

There are not always winners, especially with Manchester United this season. Here are the unfortunate players on the night…

Harry Maguire

Sent on as a substitute at half-time, Harry Maguire had a nightmare thanks to two key moments at Old Trafford.

Maguire missed a chance to score with a simple header, and then got it all wrong as Rangers scored a late equaliser.

He was outpaced and caught off balance by a long ball over the top, with Ally McCoist on TNT Sports describing his defending as ‘diabolical’.

Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt was the unluckiest player on the pitch. He scored for Manchester United in the first half, only to see it ruled out due to VAR for an off-ball foul, no fault of his.

Then to compound matters, De Ligt was substituted at half-time. We can only hope this is not due to an injury that will cause him to miss time, and just a precaution – but it’s worrying.

Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro had a mixed night. He actually played a lot better than he did a week ago, and kept his first clean sheet as a starter for Manchester United.

The problem is he only played 57 minutes, taken off for fitness reasons. United won’t want him to miss time with injury either.

Yoro was also the unfortunate player judged to have committed a foul for De Ligt’s goal.
