Manchester United fans saw flashes of brilliance from Matheus Cunha as Ruben Amorim’s side beat West Ham United 2-1 overnight.

Ruben Amorim is looking for serious improvement from his Manchester United squad ahead of his first full Premier League campaign.

The early hours of Sunday morning brought a taste of what Amorim is seeking, with United beating West Ham United 2-1 at MetLife Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot, firing home after goalkeeper Alphonse Areola had fouled Ayden Heaven.

Bruno added number two in the second half, leaving Areola stranded with a pinpoint curling finish from the edge of the box.

Jarrod Bowen pulled one back, but United ran out 2-1 winners to kick off the tour of the United States with a victory.

Bruno Fernandes on Matheus Cunha

Bruno was the star man once again for United, but fans will also have been left excited by Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian featured as a number 10 for United and showed more glimpses of the quality he will provide in the final third.

New signing Cunha didn’t find the net, but these are valuable minutes for him as he settles in with the rest of the United squad.

Bruno was asked about Cunha while speaking to NBC Sports (27/07, 2AM UK), and heaped praise on his new teammate.

Bruno noted that Cunha is like many Brazilians he knows – ‘very loud and very happy’ in the United dressing room.

The United skipper added that Cunha is ‘very funny’ and has settled in really quickly since his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Bruno feels that this period is crucial for Cunha, suggesting that United need him to form a connection with the rest of the squad quickly.

“We know most of the Brazilian people are very loud and very happy! He’s one of that, he’s a very funny guy. He’s come into the group very well, he’s settled very quickly with everyone, which is very good because we need him at his best, we need him to create this connection with every player to get the best out of him, but also the team,” he added.

Bryan Mbeumo frustration highlighted by Bruno’s Cunha comments

Bruno is seemingly pleased with Cunha’s early impact in a United shirt, but his comments also highlight some of the frustration around Bryan Mbeumo.

United finally signed Mbeumo last week, completing a deal to sign the Cameroonian forward from Brentford.

The move was a long and drawn-out affair, with United’s pursuit taking more than a month to come to fruition.

Mbeumo is now on board, but wasn’t involved against West Ham and is unlikely to play against Bournemouth in a few days.

United’s haggling means Mbeumo is now playing catch-up and may have missed three pre-season friendlies before he makes his debut.

Cunha is getting himself up to speed in the United squad, but Mbeumo is left waiting – and Bruno will hope that this doesn’t set United back with the new season now just three weeks away.
