The news Manchester United fans have been waiting for could be upon us: the Glazers are ready to sell the club.
Sky News report the disliked American owners are looking at new investment, and are prepared to consider all options.
Crucially this includes a full sale of the club, and a formal announcement could be forthcoming.
The report states: “Sky News can exclusively reveal that the Glazer family is preparing to formally announce its intention to examine potential sources of outside investment that could include a full-blown auction of arguably the world’s most famous football club.”
Glazers considering Manchester United sale
This is huge news, which Manchester United fans have longed for ever since the Glazers bought the club back in 2005.
Protests have ebbed and flowed through the years, continuing into 2022, with supporters deeply unhappy at their running of the club.
The owners have failed to invest in the facilities at the stadium and training ground and lack the capital to do so.
United are in debt by more than £500 million, with the Glazers taking out millions in dividends each year, rather than putting money in.
The news comes shortly after the club’s prize asset Cristiano Ronaldo was released from his contract.
Ronaldo criticised the Glazers in his recent interview, accusing them of failing to care for the club. This was one area where United fans agreed with the superstar.
Premier League rivals Chelsea were sold in the summer amid a bidding war, and there will not be a shortage of suitors for United.
British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe was recently asked about buying United, to which he responded that he had been told the club was not for sale. His interest could now be revived.
The Glazers may simply end up deciding to sell a minority stake, so it is important not to get too carried away, but the door is clearly open to offers.
