Manchester United fans react to David de Gea's Villarreal performance

David de Gea was coming up against the side which could have reopened the wounds from the soul-destroying Europa League final defeat in May.

But this time around United’s number one is grabbing the headlines after yet another trademark ‘Dave Saves’ display.

Villarreal had several good chances but time and time again, De Gea rescued United and kept us in the match.

The 30-year-old made six saves all of which came from inside the box and completed all 14 of his attempted passes (SofaScore).

After the heartache of not saving one penalty and missing the decisive spot kick in Gdansk, De Gea has come back a different animal this season.

Following the injury time heroics against West Ham where he saved his first penalty since 2016, the opportunity to oust Unai Emery’s side and help banish the torment of the Europa League final was an occasion De Gea couldn’t help but thrive in.

It says a lot about De Gea’s character that he has come back from one of the toughest periods in his career and is back bailing United out with such regularity once again.

United’s Champions League hopes could have been hanging by a thread if it wasn’t for De Gea’s one man rescue mission.

With his defence at times showing why they hadn’t played all together, De Gea was there to bail his teammates out.

After Alex Telles brought United level, De Gea made a world class double save to prevent the visitors from regaining the lead.

Those saves gave United the opportunity to go and search for a winner which we found from who else but Cristiano Ronaldo.

When the final whistle went and Old Trafford erupted, the 36-year-old headed straight for De Gea to express his gratitude to the man who kept his team in the game.
