Manchester United’s four biggest wins of the 2020/21 season

Manchester United are not perfect under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the team is largely more entertaining.

Between Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in May 2013 and Solskjaer’s appointment in December 2018, United scored five or more goals in a game just twice.

United have done it nine times since and that has resulted in some bumper victories this season.

Here’s a look at the very biggest during a campaign where United equalled the biggest all-time Premier League winning margin.

Manchester United 9-0 Southampton

Alex Jankewitz’s red card within two minutes meant it was always likely to be a comfortable evening for United thereafter.

It was 4-0 by half time, thanks to goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and an own-goal from Jan Bednarek.

But United didn’t slacken off and Anthony Martial resumed the scoring with just over 20 minutes to go.

Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Dan James also got on the scoresheet, with the Frenchman adding another too.

It was a night to remember, and the second straight season where Southampton have suffered a 9-0 loss.

The win equalled United’s biggest in the Premier League, the 9-0 thumping of Ipswich in March 1995.

Manchester United 5-0 RB Leipzig

In October, United were flying in the Champions League.

Mason Greenwood’s opening goal allowed Solskjaer to take on Julian Nagelsmann – who will take over at Bayern Munich next season – on the counter attack.

Which is when Marcus Rashford took over.

He came on after 63 minutes, smashed in his first goal on 74 and had completed his hat-trick by the 90th.

Rashford and United were ruthless and absolutely devastating on the break, gleefully bursting into the space Leipzig left behind their backline.

This felt like a major statement. United had taken apart one of last season’s Champions League semi-finalists. Then Istanbul happened.

Manchester United 6-2 Leeds

Leeds had been itching to get back to Old Trafford but within three minutes they were 2-0 thanks to a Scott McTominay brace.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side kept attacking, which meant there was plenty of space for United to rampage into.

United had 26 shots and 14 on target. This really could have ended up any scoreline.

It was the perfect way to ruin Leeds’ first league crack at United since 2004 and the only way it could have been sweeter is if fans were in the ground.

Manchester United 6-2 Roma

United went in 2-1 down at half time but produced a devastating attacking performance in the second 45 minutes of an absolutely huge match.

Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes got a brace apiece, with Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood completing the scoring.

Roma were thrashed 7-1 at Old Trafford in April 2007 and must have thought they’d finally banished the ghosts of that nightmare.

It happened again as Solskjaer finally broke his semi-final hoodoo.
