Teden Mengi makes comeback for Manchester United's under-21 side

Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi made his comeback at under-21 level last night in the EFL Trophy.

Mengi has been out of action with injury which has kept him out all season so far.

His last appearance came on loan for Birmingham City against Middlesbrough in March, one of nine appearances he made during a loan spell.

The centre-back was not pictured at all in pre-season training, or in training since, and last night’s match against Fleetwood Town was a nice surprise to see him back.

Teden Mengi makes comeback

Teden Mengi made his comeback for Manchester United’s under-21s in last night’s 2-2 draw against Fleetwood Town.

The 20-year-old came off the bench in the second half to replace Bjorn Hardley as part of a triple change from the Red Devils.

He was tasked with dealing with experienced striker Joe Garner, formerly of Preston and Rangers.

Mengi has decent first team know-how himself, after a loan spell with Derby County in 2021 and Birmingham City in 2022.

Both of his loan stints were interrupted by hamstring injuries, but he has picked up 18 Championship appearances during these spells.

Mengi made his Manchester United debut in the Europa League against LASK in 2020, and also featured in the Champions League against Young Boys in 2021.

The defender has previously captained United at under-18s and under-21 level, and in the short-term, getting him back is likely to be a boost fort the under-21s.

United have leaked goals at this level this season, conceding 27 goals in nine matches. Getting Mengi back is a helpful boost.

United drew the game last night 2-2 with Charlie McNeill (penalty) and Shola Shoretire scoring.

There was a penalty shootout at the end of the game which United lost 5-4, with Mengi netting his spot-kick.

United still topped the group with seven points out of a possible nine picked up.

Young striker Joe Hugill also came off the bench to make his first appearance of the season. He has been pictured in first team training over the past week.
