Manchester United Under-21s beaten by Fleetwood Town on penalties in EFL Trophy

Manchester United Under-21s were beaten by Fleetwood Town on penalties in tonight’s EFL Trophy clash.

Travis Binnion’s side wrapped up their Papa Johns group-stage campaign with a shootout defeat against the League One side at Highbury Stadium.

The young Reds took the game to penalties after Shola Shoretire scored a stoppage time equaliser to clinch a point with a 2-2 draw.

Binnion’s men were looking to extend their 100 per cent record in this season’s competition after beating Carlisle United and Barrow.

Our under-21s were already guaranteed qualification from Northern Group G prior to tonight’s game, as we topped the table with six points, four clear of each of the other three sides in the section.

With Erik ten Hag’s senior side facing Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow night, Zidane Iqbal, Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho were not involved against Fleetwood.

The 19-year-old produced an audacious paneka penalty after Omori Forson was fouled.

At half-time Toby Collyer replaced Charlie Savage before Fleetwood, who are managed by former Celtic midfielder Scott Brown, scored two goals in four minutes to turn the game on its head.

In the 66th minute, Binnion made a triple substitution which saw Teden Mengi and Joe Hugill make their first appearances of the season.

Veteran Tom Huddlestone was the third player to be introduced and the trio replaced Bjorn Hardley, Isak Hansen-Aarøen and McNeil.

After collecting a pass from Huddlestone from inside the penalty area, Shoretire clinically finished with his left foot into the bottom corner in the 92nd minute.

The 18-year-old has now scored four goals and provided three assists from his last four matches.

With a further point up for grabs for the winner on penalties, Hugill missed his penalty before Nathan Bishop saved Carlos Mendes Gomes’ spot kick.

But with him needing to score to keep United in it, Shoretire saw his penalty saved.

Starting XI: Bishop, Jurado, Bennett (C), Hardley, Murray, Savage, Mainoo, Forson, Hansen-Aarøen, Shoretire, McNeill.

Subs used: Mengi, Collyer, Oyedele, Huddlestone, Hugill.
