Manchester United’s Under-21s thrashed Southampton 5-1 in a Premier League 2 meeting on Saturday.

Tyler Fletcher opened the scoring for Travis Binnion’s side with a well-struck volley before Dan Gore doubled United’s lead after half an hour.

The Reds went in at the interval with a comfortable two-goal lead.

More goals came in the second half through Ethan Wheatley and then Jack Moorhouse with a brace.

Southampton scored a mere consolation goal, but Manchester United had very little to worry about throughout the game.

Ruben Amorim spotted in attendance

Just one day before his first-ever Manchester derby, Ruben Amorim was spotted at Carrington to keep an eye on the under-21s in their 5-1 win over Southampton.

Amorim was spotted standing alongside first-team coach Darren Fletcher.

It’s always encouraging to see a first-team manager take an interest in the youth teams. We hope that some of the players he watched will eventually be able to make the jump to senior football.

Ethan Wheatley ready to step up to senior football

One player trying to impress Amorim is Wheatley, who became United’s 250th academy graduate after making his Premier League debut under Erik ten Hag in April. The young striker came off the bench in a 4-2 win over Sheffield United.

In front of Amorim on Saturday afternoon, Wheatley scored a sublime goal to make it 4-0, but it remains to be seen if he did enough to impress the Manchester United head coach.

The best way for Wheatley to get into the first-team picture is by scoring goals at youth level.

Wrexham have shown interest in Wheatley ahead of the January transfer window but only time will tell if United think that would be a good way for the striker to gain senior experience.

Interest in Wheatley will surely continue to grow if he continues scoring goals of this quality.
