Manchester United youngster Ondrej Mastny has left the club on loan for the remainder of the season.

United announced Mastny has joined Northern Irish club Portadown FC, who sit 12th, bottom of the table in the NIFL Premiership.

Mastny, 20, joined United in 2018 and has made 39 appearances at under-18s and under-21 level.

However, he has only featured once for the under-21s this season in the league, overtaken by FA Youth Cup winner Radek Vitek.

Mastny leaves on loan

Mastny’s chances of breaking through at Manchester United are slim, due to the competition for places in goal.

He is behind Matej Kovar, out on loan, and Nathan Bishop and Radek Vitek. At the age of 20, he needs to play competitive football and this move is a good one for his development.

Mastny hails from the Czech Republic, who he has represented at every level from under-15s to under-19s, and has also been called into the under-20 squad.

The youngster trained with the Manchester United first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. This is the first loan of his career.

At Portadown he follows former United youngster Jacob Carney, who had a successful loan spell at the club in 2020/21, before signing with Sunderland.

Mastny is one of several loan exits expected at Old Trafford before the transfer deadline, with Shola Shoretire and Charlie Savage leaving over the past fortnight.
