Manchester United youngster Toby Collyer captained the under-21 side to an impressive victory.

At half-time at Oakwell, Manchester United’s young side will have felt pretty hard done by in their EFL Trophy clash. Despite dominating possession and matching Barnsley for chances created, the under-21s were 2-0 down.

And that was the way the scoreline stayed until the 81st minute – when United’s second half improvement paid off.

Ethan Ennis pulled one back before a stunning Jack Fletcher double clinched a memorable 3-2 victory.

Manchester United fans praise Toby Collyer

It was notable to see midfielder Toby Collyer lead Manchester United’s under-21s out as captain. This was a test for him and a chance for him to pick up minutes.

Collyer came off the bench in the Community Shield and was named among the substitutes for Manchester United’s Premier League opener.

United’s 251st academy graduate is expected to pick up more opportunities for the first team this season, especially once rotation comes in with the Europa League – even if Manuel Ugarte signs.

United fans were impressed with Collyer’s performance, posting on X to laud his efforts.

One fan wrote: “Toby Collyer’s positioning awareness around the park is top. Technically sound boy .He can develop into a really top boy.”

Another excited supporter added: “Some comeback that from the 21s, Jack Fletcher and Toby Collyer are insane.”

“What a performance by Collyer!!”, a third fan wrote, while a fourth added: “The boy is ready.”

Another fan wrote: “Collyer is a player with special potentials and an interesting ceiling. I hope Ten Hag pays quality attention to his development between now and the start of next season. Definitely one for the future.”

A sixth comment added: “Collyer is so good fam. That two footedness and pass selection means he’ll be here for a long time.”

Another fan expressed his hopes for the season ahead, adding: “Once he polishes his game a bit he could be very good. Hope we see him in the cups.”

And another wrote: “Baller. Loves taking risks, calm and composed, both legs, we have another one.”

Collyer very effective in possession

Manchester United showed great spirit to come back from two goals down and the captain has to take some credit for that. This was a feather in the cap in Collyer’s impressive development.

He helped the team dominate possession, United ended up with 61 per cent, and he played an important role in pushing the team up towards the final third.

Collyer played all 90 minutes and completed 44 of 47 passes attempted, 94 per cent, while creating one goalscoring chance.

These passes weren’t restricted to simple short passes either. He completed nine of nine long-passes attempted.

Collyer won four duels, one free-kick, one tackle and made one clearance, doing his work on the defensive side of the game, against a Barnsley side which faded in the second half.

This was an encouraging performance from Collyer, and one which gives him a chance of staying with the first team squad this weekend when United face his former club Brighton this weekend.
