Manchester United’s U21 side have been in impressive form this season, and that continued in the National League Cup on Tuesday night.

Travis Binnion has Manchester United’s U21 side top of the Premier League 2, but it was the National League Cup on Tuesday which saw the Red Devils pick up a first win of the tournament.

Taking on Rochdale, United walked out 2-0 winners, with Chido Obi scoring his fifth of the season to open scoring and James Scanlon adding the second.

This win keeps the tournament hopes alive, with two games played – however one win from the game in hand would catapult the Red Devils up the table.

Chido Obi scores past former Manchester United academy star Tom Myles

Obi’s goal came by way of a brilliant press from Jim Thwaites, nabbing the ball from the Rochdale defender, sliding the ball to the striker who converted his fifth of the season, and a second in two starts.

Then, United’s second came through Scanlon late on with Victor Musa grabbing the assist.

Interestingly, the goals were scored by former United academy player Tom Myles who was in goal for Rochdale, having been released by the Red Devils in the summer.

Myles was part of Adam Lawrence’s U18 side which won the treble in 2023/24, but now he is fighting to earn a contract beyond next summer at Rochdale.

Chido Obi deserves return to Manchester United’s first-team

Obi has always been a goalscorer, taking the U18 Premier League by storm, and stepping into the first team with ease.

Since then, Obi scored twice in the post-season tour, but failed to grab his first in competitive appearances, despite coming close against Fulham in the FA Cup.

Obi has improved ten-fold, rounding out his game with strong link-up, hard work and hold up play, all of which being key for a striker.

Due to this and Amorim clearly not rating Joshua Zirkzee, Obi should be brought back into the first-team, as the current set-up would give him the opportunity to score and impress, which last season did not.
