Manchester United need to make a decision over Shola Shoretire’s future next year as the youngster continues to shine.

Kobbie Mainoo‘s rise has shown there is real quality coming through Manchester United’s academy, with the midfielder joining Alejandro Garnacho in the first team.

Both players have overtaken a player who made his first team debut long before them, Shola Shoretire.

Shoretire became Manchester United’s seventh youngest player of all time when he made his debut in February 2021 at just 17.

But since then he has not been able to establish himself as a regular, and has not been part of a first team squad this season.

Shola Shoretire enjoying strong under-21 season

Overlooked by manager Erik ten Hag for first team opportunities so far, Shola Shoretire is doing everything he possibly can to get himself noticed.

At the weekend he scored one goal and provided an assist as Manchester United’s under-21 side beat Newcastle 3-2.

This continued an excellent individual season for Shoretire, who is putting up big numbers for the team.

In under-21 games across league action and the EFL Trophy, Shoretire has 12 goal contributions in 11 total appearances.

This is broken down with seven goals and five assists. Only Joe Hugill (eight goals) has netted more.

Shoretire has been impressively consistent throughout the season, doing everything he can to earn a first team call-up, which is yet to materialise.

Next step for Shola Shoretire should be a loan move

Shola Shoretire may not be in Manchester United’s currently plans but he remains a big talent and is clearly too good for under-21 level. He needs to take another step forward.

Last season Shoretire spent time on loan at Bolton Wanderers, where he started well, gaining good experience playing in League One, although ended the season out of their starting line-up.

Now 19, Shoretire does need another challenge, and Manchester United need to choose the right environment for him to shine.

His form for the under-21s could be stirring interest ahead of the January transfer window, and it is time for him to go out and gain more experience.

If he is to stand a chance of making it at United and grabbing Erik ten Hag’s attention, a January loan move looks essential.
