Raphael Varane named in France squad for World Cup

Raphael Varane left the pitch in tears at Stamford Bridge last month when he suffered an injury.

Varane knew immediately that he faced a spell on the sidelines which would put his World Cup place in doubt.

The 29-year-old played a key role for France in qualifiers and is hoping to help Les Bleus retain their trophy.

The centre-back has been out of action ever since and is not expected to play in Manchester United’s final two games before the break.

Varane has now been given the news he had desperately been waiting and hoping for.

Raphael Varane named in France squad for World Cup

France’s World Cup squad was named last night and Raphael Varane has made it in, United’s club website confirmed.

This will be the defender’s third World Cup tournament and he will be working hard to try and get fit for their opening game.

France’s first match is against Australia on November 22, followed by a match against Christian Eriksen’s Denmark four days later.

In the recent UEFA Nations League games, France rested Varane against Denmark and lost. They will be particularly keen to get him back for this game.

The centre-back has had a mixed time with injuries since his £34 million move to Manchester United – but this one looks to have been just minor enough to keep his World Cup dream alive.

Varane’s former United teammate Paul Pogba did not make it into the squad, having struggled with injury at Juventus, failing to play a single game.

There is also no place in the squad for Anthony Martial, who has started only one match for Manchester United this season due to injuries, although he could lead the line in the Carabao Cup tonight.
