Lisandro Martinez is now a World Cup winner, after Argentina beat France on penalties in the final.

A shootout was required to determine a winner from an epic game, in which Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick, with Lionel Messi (2) and Angel di Maria on target for Argentina.

Martinez was an unused substitute on the day, a choice which made life harder for Argentina as they gave up a 2-0 lead in the second half, when they should have brought him on to close out the game.

His teammates did him proud in the shootout, giving Martinez the best moment of his career.

Manchester United have two World Cup winners in defence

Martinez lifted the trophy with the rest of his teammates, after star man Lionel Messi had been the first player to hold it aloft.

The Manchester United defender started two games at the tournament, making valuable contributions in defence in the knockout stages.

He will return to United as a World Cup winner, to partner the 2018 winner Raphael Varane, in the team’s backline.

Varane was on the losing side with France this time around, limping off in extra-time, looking exhausted. United will have to assess him for injury upon his return.

United signed Martinez in the summer from Ajax, and he has become a huge fan favourite at Old Trafford.

We can’t wait to have him back in action, although it is unclear just how quickly he will be ready to return to action for United, whether we may have to wait until 2023.
