Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has placed an important spotlight on former Barcelona star Marcus Rashford amid England’s World Cup campaign this summer.

Marcus Rashford has been at the World Cup in North America after his permanent summer move to Barcelona failed to materialise at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The 28-year-old England forward has featured in all four of England’s World Cup matches so far and Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel has started Rashford twice.

Manchester United ace Rashford, who netted against Croatia in England’s Group L opener, has been competing with Anthony Gordon for a place in the starting XI.

Why Paul Scholes expects to see more from Man Utd star Marcus Rashford in England’s World Cup run

England have progressed to the round of 16 at the World Cup and will now face tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Monday.

Thomas Tuchel’s men avoided crashing out of the World Cup in the last 32 after DR Congo came close to causing a stunning upset at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

However, England were bailed out in the second half after Bayern Munich and Three Lions striker Harry Kane netted a stunning brace in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday.

Paul Scholes insisted that Marcus Rashford is in the same bracket as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka for the impact that he should offer for England.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “They’ve got players who can win you games of football.

“Marcus Rashford can do it. Probably hasn’t done it yet. He scored in that Croatia game, but I still think there’s more to come from him.

“Saka needs games, but again, he’s a match-winner. And obviously Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are the main ones to watch.”

Man Utd icon Paul Scholes is struggling to see a clear frontrunner to win the World Cup this summer

Scholes said that he has not seen England stamp their authority in World Cup matches under Tuchel, who succeeded Sir Gareth Southgate as Three Lions boss.

The 51-year-old United legend admitted that he is not fully convinced there is a clear favourite to lift the World Cup trophy amid his current reservations around England.

“I don’t think we’ve seen a team that can win the World Cup yet,” he explained.

“Now, don’t get me wrong, they [England] can, they can still do it. They can. They’re gonna have to improve.

“I think that goes without saying. There’s talent in there. I just don’t think you’re ever going to see a flowing game of football with England.”

Scholes added: “They [England] haven’t got [those] type of players.

“He’s [Tuchel] picked a team to overpower teams, be quicker than teams, be stronger than teams, be more physical than other teams rather than play the beautiful game, as you say, a beautiful game of football. I don’t think that will ever happen.”

The winner of Mexico vs England on Monday will play either Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals of this summer’s World Cup.
