Matheus Cunha gives blunt response to Brazilian reporter over World Cup question

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha is determined that Brazil improve – but offers no guarantees.

Brazil’s World Cup campaign got off to an underwhelming start with a 1-1 draw with Morocco.

The result was not a damaging one, but the performances left plenty to be desired.

Casemiro came in for heavy criticism following the draw. He was substituted at half-time after being booked in the first half.

Matheus Cunha was omitted from the line-up, introduced after 60 minutes, but he was unable to tip the result in Brazil’s favour.

He gave a brief interview after the game, which showed some of the irritation in the Brazil camp.

Matheus Cunha on Brazil’s World Cup

Matheus Cunha spoke to reporters following Brazil’s draw with Morocco, and accepted that they started the game poorly.

He told ESPN: “We know our quality. We couldn’t have started the way we did, but we are ready for the competition.”

Cunha was then asked if Brazil would go on and win the competition, before giving a fairly blunt response.

“I’m not a fortune teller, I don’t work with those things, but we’re going to do our best to be champions.”

Cunha is actually being sensible not to make predictions.

If he says Brazil will win the World Cup, then his quotes could be used to mock him later on. If he says they can’t, then it would show defeatism.

Cunha could be back among the starters

Matheus Cunha did not start for Brazil as he was omitted for Igor Thiago, in a surprise selection from Carl Ancelotti.

Thiago played poorly, missing an early opportunity when the game was scoreless. He was substituted for Cunha in the second half.

It would not be a surprise to see Cunha in the starting line-up for Brazil’s next game against Haiti, where he will get the opportunity to do his talking on the pitch.
