Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has spoken out to express his sadness at England’s World Cup exit.
Shaw started all five of England’s games including the team’s World Cup quarter-final elimination at the hands of France.
Now, more than 48 hours after the defeat, Shaw has posted his first message on social media.

Shaw says he is ‘gutted’ by the 2-1 loss, but is also grateful to be part of the squad, which he feels is moving in the right direction.
The left-back also thanked the England fans who travelled to Qatar for the tournament.
Luke Shaw breaks silence
Shaw is optimistic England can go on to win a major trophy before long, encouraged that the team is packed with talent and are making progress.
This was Shaw’s first World Cup since 2014, where he appeared as a teenager in England’s final group game against Costa Rica, with the team already eliminated.
Injury and loss of form under Jose Mourinho saw him miss out in 2018, so to play such a prominent role in 2022 shows how he has got his career back on track since.
He will be 31 by time the next World Cup comes around, and has a good chance to feature. But he would have thought 2018 was a shoe-in, back in 2014, and will be taking nothing for granted.
A lot of hard work lies ahead for Shaw at club level to ensure he is in the mix in 2026.
