Fred breaks silence on Brazil’s World Cup elimination

Manchester United midfielder Fred has broken his silence on Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup.

Brazil were beaten by Croatia on Friday, taking a 1-0 lead in extra-time before allowing an equaliser, and going on to lose on penalties.

Teammate Antony reacted in the heat of the moment, expressing his sadness on social media, and was wished luck for the future by the great Pele.

Fred chose not to post anything until Monday night, taking a more reflective approach.

Fred posted a message saying Brazil believed right until the end and still finds the defeat ‘hard to explain’.

The sadness of the moment cannot erase everything we have accomplished to this day. We’ve dreamed together over the last few years. We believe until the last second in the possibility of taking the title to our people.

Unfortunately the defeat came. A pain that’s hard to explain. Even harder to put into words everything we live after the final whistle.

We must never forget our origins, our beliefs and where we came from. Our mission has always been to bring joy to all Brazilians.

In this way, we will always follow with God in our hearts and a smile on our face, dreaming of one day taking Brazil back to the top of world football.

Thank you all for your support throughout this journey. We’re sad, but life goes on and we can’t bow our heads.

The midfielder must now return to Manchester United and fight for his place, with club football set to resume shortly.

He was only selected to start four out of 14 Premier League games under Erik ten Hag this season, and began two of Brazil’s five World Cup games.

Both Tite and Erik ten Hag have considered his partnership with Casemiro to be non-essential, with Fred frequently dropped for alternative options.

It is now more than four years since his £47 million switch to United, and his contract is set to expire at the end of the current season.

A report from The Guardian recently claimed Ten Hag is willing to let him leave at the end of the season. It is up to the Brazilian to prove he deserves to stay.
