Casemiro says Brazil defeat ‘brought me the most pain in my entire career’

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro says Brazil’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Croatia is the most painful of his career.

Casemiro broke his silence on the defeat to post a message on Instagram late last night, and made clear he was still clearly hurting at the loss.

The midfielder said he is still struggling to understand the loss, which came after they blew an extra-time lead and lost on penalties to Croatia.

He also thanked Brazil manager Tite, who stepped down as manager after Brazil’s loss.

After Brazil took the lead against Croatia through Neymar’s goal, they celebrated wildly. It had looked like they were on their way to the semi-finals.

Then they collapsed, and their dream of their first World Cup since 2002 went up in smoke. Casemiro took until now to comment, and he’s still evidently very upset.

It’s been almost three days, but the pain remains. I wanted to make this post with a cooler head and a better understanding of what happened, but it’s still hard to understand by the way we’re out. By far that was the defeat that brought me the most pain in my entire career.

I imagine that you, who have cheered a lot for us, are also feeling a similar pain and I’m very sorry about that. Our greatest desire was to bring this title back to our country, bring joy to you, and we did everything in our power. It’s all right. But football is like this: as much as you do everything right there is no way to control the result. I’ve lived that a few times both for and against.

I want to thank you for all your support that cheered and encouraged us in this World Cup. Thank you from the heart.

I also thank Tite and the technical committee for his farewell. You’ve done a fantastic job in the last six years and you deserve that title. I’m so sorry you didn’t come. I wish you all the luck in the world in the next goals.

I’m sure we’ll get through this pain and move on even stronger.

Casemiro will know this could be his best chance to win the World Cup. He could certainly play at the 2026 tournament, when he will be 34 – but by then he may not be performing at the same level.

Right now he is playing at a very high level, as he showed with Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles and did not lose any. He is simply not used to losing.

The last World Cup he did not play the quarter-final loss due to suspension. This time he was in the thick of it, and looked set to clinch a famous win, before their collapse.

Erik ten Hag says he wants Manchester United’s World Cup stars to come straight back in and help the squad as quickly as they can.

But he may have to give Casemiro a little extra time to process this loss, as it seems to have hit him hard.
