Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is dreaming of helping Portugal create World Cup history.

The last time the World Cup was held in the USA in 1994, Portugal did not even qualify. The same fate befell them in 1998.

But ever since 2002, Portugal have been regulars at the World Cup, and enter the 2026 tournament dreaming of winning the trophy.

They have one of the most in-form players in the world too, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes is ready for the World Cup

Portugal begin their World Cup campaign on June 17 against DR Congo. Uzbekistan and Colombia are also in their group.

Bruno Fernandes is looking beyond the group stages, believing that Portugal have everything required to win the competition.

He is quoted via SAPO: “The dream is to be world champions… The essential thing is that we focus on what we can do to change the fact that Portugal has never won and bring the long-awaited World Cup home for the first time.

“They ]the fans] have total confidence in us and believe that we have the quality to be the best team in the world, reach the World Cup final and become champions.

“We have to take advantage of the positive side of this and channel all that energy. Our people are on our side and truly believe in the national team.”

Portugal reached the quarter-finals in 2022 before a shock elimination against surprise package Morocco.

Portugal have Ronaldo-factor

Portugal also have Cristiano Ronaldo, who at 41 is likely playing at his last ever World Cup.

It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo will be a positive or a negative. He has been a distraction at the last two major tournaments.

He sent a message on Instagram ahead of Portugal’s tournament kicking off, writing: “Tomorrow starts a new chapter.

“We’ve worked hard to get to this moment and now it’s time to give our all for our country, and for all the Portuguese communities that support us here and around the world. Believe it like we do!”
