Manchester United winger Antony has reacted to Brazil’s shock World Cup exit at the hands of Croatia on penalties.

Croatia made the 2018 final but went into yesterday’s quarter-final as underdogs with Brazil among the favourites to lift the crown.

Antony came off the bench as Brazil chased a winner in normal time but the game ended 0-0 and went to an additional 30 minutes.

Neymar put Brazil in front, but it was not enough to see them over the line with Bruno Petkovic forcing a shoot-out with an 117th minute equaliser.

Antony reacts to Brazil’s shock exit

After the game, Antony took to Instagram to share his reaction to the defeat, which left him visibly so upset on the pitch.

It was a long, emotional message, making it clear how long he had been dreaming about lifting the World Cup and how he would be back stronger.

Of course, his United teammates Fred and Casemiro also suffered World Cup heartbreak against Croatia, with United having a strong Brazilian contingent.

Alex Telles is on loan from United to Sevilla and was also part of the Brazil squad but suffered an injury which ended his tournament early.

Antony’s reaction sums up the unique challenge posed by this World Cup being in the middle of the domestic season.

Erik ten Hag has made it clear he wants his players back as quickly as possible after their elimination from the tournament.

That seems reasonable, given United have an EFL Cup game against Burnley in 11 days, but players usually get some time after a major tournament to digest their disappointment before they go again.

Antony, Fred and Casemiro will not get that and it is down to themselves as professionals, Ten Hag and United as a club to make sure that does not linger into the second part of the season.
