Former Ajax winger hits out at Cristiano Ronaldo comparisons

Cristiano Ronaldo was not involved for Manchester United at the weekend after storming down the tunnel against Tottenham before full-time last week.

Club manager Erik ten Hag told his pre-Chelsea press conference that Ronaldo had refused to come off the bench late against Spurs.

Ten Hag insisted Ronaldo still has a part to play, scotching suggestions he could freeze the striker out.

Ronaldo comparisons

Erik ten Hag dealt with the Ronaldo issue decisively, and it helped him that this was not the first time he has encountered the situation.

The Sun and The Star highlighted an incident at Ajax where Amin Younes allegedly refused to come off the bench in an Eredivisie match.

Ten Hag responded by refusing to pick Younes the rest of the season and he was subsequently sold to Napoli.

The comparisons went viral on social media, seemingly to the irritation of Younes, reports Voetbal International.

In a since deleted tweet, Younes hit out at being tagged in a video of the incident, with VI’s headline, writing: “Agitated Younes after Ronaldo comparison: ‘Thanks for the millionth response'”

Younes also wrote: “Whole other discussion and pair of shoes”.

The 29-year-old German international now plays for Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, although has recently been loaned back to the Netherlands with Utrecht.

Younes had played in the Europa League final against Manchester United in 2017, with Erik ten Hag taking over months later.

His early clash with Younes helped him set the tone for the high standards and discipline he expects from his Ajax player, and the manager is taking a similar approach at Manchester United.
