Odysseas Vlachodimos linked with Manchester United move

Manchester United’s hunt for a new goalkeeper has seen the club linked to Benfica number one Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Fabrizio Romano reports Vlachodimos is on United’s list of potential signings, and face competition from Ajax.

Who is Odysseas Vlachodimos

Vlachodimos signed for Benfica from Panathaniakos in 2018 for around £2 million. He had begun his career at Stuttgart in Germany.

After a successful first year at Benfica, the club tied him to a long term deal which runs until 2024.

Vlachodimos has been Benfica’s first choice goalkeeper over the past four seasons, racking up more than 160 games for the club.

Despite being the ‘number one’, he wears the club’s number 99 shirt.

Now 28, Vlachodimos is now a regular for the Greece national team, and is attracting interest across Europe.

Portuguese newspaper Record have recently linked Vlachodimos with a move to Leicester City as a possible replacement for Kasper Schmeichel, who was sold to Nice.

Vlachodimos was praised by Jurgen Klopp after his performance against Liverpool in the Champions League last season.

Klopp told BT Sport of Benfica: “[They] played a really good game but the goalie was the best player. He made a couple of really good saves. With the situations we had we usually score more. But we didn’t, I think mainly because of the goalie. Credit to him.”

What are Manchester United doing in goal

This is a great question, with different reported transfer targets suggestive of different strategies.

It’s clear David de Gea needs replacing, but uncertain if United actually intend to sign a successor this summer.

Vlachodimos would be coming in to potentially replace De Gea, not back him up. The same applies for another linked goalkeeper, Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Yann Sommer.

United have also been linked with signing back-ups, with The Sun linking Norwich City goalkeeper Tim Krul, over the weekend.

The path United will take will become clear over the next fortnight, while David de Gea needs to deliver a big performance for the team tonight against Liverpool.
