Manchester United transfer target Pau Torres ready to leave for 'first rate project'

Manchester United transfer target Pau Torres is ready to leave Villarreal to join a ‘first rate project’, reports AS.

And the good news for Manchester United, is the Red Devils are still considered to be so, with Erik ten Hag set to lead a rebuild.

Torres is open to leaving Villarreal after the Spanish side finished seventh in La Liga and only qualified for the Europa Conference League.

The centre-back played a key role in helping Villarreal reach the Champions League semi-finals. But now he could be at the end of his project with the club.

Torres ready to leave for ‘first rate project’

AS report Torres would consider Manchester United, along with Liverpool or Manchester City, as a ‘first rate project’.

Neither Liverpool or City are believed to be looking to sign a centre-back this summer, which gives Manchester United a good chance of landing the 25-year-old defender.

Villarreal newspaper El Periodico Meditteraneo reported that Torres’ agents are ready to travel to Manchester to hold talks, an indication of the centre-back’s willingness to consider a new club.

Last season he rejected a move to Tottenham, and AS report that while he has changed his stance, there are certain conditions.

The report states: “But this season things are different, since it seems that Pau would be more open to listening to the alternatives that may come to him, as long as they are of the highest level. The defender will only leave Villarreal to make a definitive leap in his career , since he does not plan to leave the club of his life for a similar project.

“The alternatives go through teams that can give you a first-rate project and a big economic jump. An option in which names like United, City or Liverpool are the ones that could seduce him for a change this summer. What’s more, these are also clubs that can face an operation of 50 million euros, which is more or less what the defender’s departure is priced at.”

Torres is one of three centre-backs United appear to be considering. The MEN reported last month Torres was on United’s radar.

Ajax duo Jurrien Timber is an option, The Mirror report, although he can also play right-back. Another Ajax defender, Lisandro Martinez, was also reported last week by The Telegraph to be a possible defensive signing.

United also need signings up front and crucially, in midfield, and Erik ten Hag has to balance the transfer budget accordingly.
